- The design program required a solution for two separate museums in City Park, Budapest. This 200 years old public park is in decay due to the lack of maintenance and overuse but has fantastic natural and historic reserves. Our architectural concept aims to establish new urban and cultural connections by placing a concise element into the park. The planned building does not exceed the site of an existing cultural centre on the spot, to be demolished soon. Our design concentrates the New National Gallery and the Ludwig Museum in one building. We were interested in creating rich possibilities of interaction between the two different collections while maintaining their institutional separation. As a principle NNG is placed at the outer zone of the building, in a crust zone, while LUMU is located in the core of the building. As a result, the meeting of the two museums is not restricted into points; instead we designed an adjustable filter zone between them. That intelligent zone is enabled with different functions: it locates technical and security facilities but also offers several micro sized viewing rooms, cabinets that can communicate with both collections. As it is today the museum is both a place for contemplation, silent concentration, at the same time it is a meeting place for public life and creative amusement. Linked to this idea of flexibility, boundaries are perceived as permeable zones (e.g. we placed small separate unites outside at satellite position as a shrine, a café and a lift) or they are conceived as veils. This veil is a fine porcelain skin on the façade while it is a textile veil inside. Touchable and untouchable characters on a both physical and conceptual level are very diverse throughout the different parts of these two museums. The roof structure of the building, an arched cable net construction that spans 90 metres can also be interpreted as a metaphor of the untouchable character. Naturally we hoped to lure people from the outside world into our clear and bright structure, take them by the hand throughout the different exhibition areas from the more ordinary zones on floor levels up to roof level where a very special, elegant space can be experienced under the curved roof.
